The European Space Agency is planning to create a permanent lunar base which could serve multiple purposes.
The base dubbed "Moon Village" primarily aims to pave the way for the day when man will eventually live and work on the Moon.
One possibility is to use the Moon's own natural resources to build and sustain a lunar base. The first step would be for a lunar rover to 3-D print a structure using ice, metals and minerals.
The rover would then land on the surface to inflate a dome and construct a building to protect it. The project is expected to finish by the year 20-30.
The Village would likely be built near the poles of the moon, where water ice is trapped at the bottom of dark craters. Such placement would provide water for the residents as well as constant daylight.
The base will also allow experts to set up a radio telescope on the Earth's far side. Several space-faring nations including the U.S, Russia and China will cooperate with the E-S-A to make the space shot a reality.
