Eight US sailors injured in landing accident on aircraft carrier
Eight US sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower were injured during an aircraft landing off the coast of Virginia, the Navy said.
The sailors sustained injuries when a landing cable on the flight deck snapped as an E-2C Hawkeye aircraft touched down on the nuclear-powered carrier.
The accident happened at 2 pm Friday about 80 miles east of Virginia where the Eisenhower was conducting a training exercise for an upcoming deployment.
All eight sailors were in stable condition and none had life-threatening injuries, US Navy Commander Mike Kafka, spokesman for Naval Air Force Atlantic, said in a news release.
Six of the sailors were airlifted to hospitals in Norfolk and Portsmouth and two were treated on board the Eisenhower, the commander said.
The Hawkeye aircraft recovered from the botched landing and flew safely to its naval station in Norfolk, Kafka added.
A Navy official said all flight operations aboard the Eisenhower have been suspended. The official said it is “extremely rare” for a landing cable aboard a carrier to “part.”
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
