Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has endorsed Donald Trump for the US presidency, calling the Republican frontrunner “a very intelligent man.”
Carson, a conservative favorite who last week suspended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, made the endorsement on Friday at one of Trump's clubs in Palm Beach, Florida, a major development that gives the billionaire a significant boost.
"There are two different Donald Trumps," Carson said in his endorsement. "There's the one you see on the stage, and there's the one who's is very cerebral, sits there, you can have a very good conversation with him."
Carson praised Trump as "a very intelligent man who cares deeply about America."
He said that the election is "not about me. It's not about Donald Trump. It's about America."
The retired neurosurgeon’s endorsement for Trump perhaps is the most high-profile approval for the real estate mogul’s candidacy since New Jersey Governor Chris Christie backed him last month.
Notorious for his anti-Islam remarks, Carson briefly led the Republican presidential race but stumbled after months of “staff infighting and strategy shifts,” as put by the Washington Post.
In mid-December 2015, Carson released a policy proposal, calling for a federal investigation into whether the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim advocacy group in the US, has ties to terrorism.
Trump, who has never held elected office, is leading the Republican race and has so far won the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Hawai, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Vermont.
