Trump leads Rubio by double digits in Florida: Poll

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has a double digits lead over Marco Rubio in his home state of Florida, a critical winner-take-all state that could seal the fate of the Trump candidacy on March 15.

The Quinnipiac University poll, released on Thursday, showed Trump leading with 44 percent while Rubio trailing behind with 28 percent.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz is in third place with 12 percent support and Ohio Governor John Kasich in fourth with 7 percent support.

Trump's 44-28 percent lead over Rubio reflects the momentum of the businessman billionaire’s string of victories in the last three early state races.

“Florida is the single biggest prize of the primary season because it is the largest state to allocate its delegates on a winner-take-all basis,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

“If Sen. Rubio can’t win in his own home state, it is difficult to see how he can win elsewhere,” he added.

“The size and shape of Trump’s lead is impressive,” Brown wrote in an analysis.

Florida has 99 delegates, which makes it the biggest winner-take-all state in the race for delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

Trump emerged victorious in Tuesday night’s Nevada caucuses, his third win out of the four contests so far held for the Republican Party’s nomination.

After his second-place finish in the Iowa caucuses, the billionaire has swiped the floor with his rivals in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, enjoying double-digit margins.
