Press TV has interviewed Mark Glenn, an author and journalist in Idaho, to discuss the recent remarks by Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on UN-brokered peace talks on Syria.
Following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Iran has always said there should be a ceasefire; always said that there should be political dialogue. Do you think the rest of the world is not catching up to that?
Glenn: The rest of world would like an end to the horrific violence that is taking place in Syria now; for five years. Unfortunately, there are few players in this who insist upon maintaining the violent narrative that exists right now and of course those players are the United States, Israel, the UK, France and other players in the West. And so I fully understand and appreciate what the foreign minister is saying here that the only real solution to Syria’s problems is through political dialogue. Unfortunately, however, the only way to get to that place where people can begin talking; unfortunately, there has to be the application of military operations against these Western-backed and Western- trained Jihadists who have turned Syria into one of the largest graveyards in the world. And so while we all look forward to the day when rational people can sit down and discuss things like rational human beings, unfortunately, we have to get to that point where such discussion is possible and, unfortunately, that requires a kind of military assistance that we are seeing taking place on the part of Russia, on the part of Iran and on the part of Hezbollah.
Press TV: You mentioned the military aspect because certainly that is advancing as well. The Syrian army has made some very significant advances over the past couple of days especially cutting off militant supply line to Aleppo, liberating two key towns which were besieged for a period of three years I believe. So I am wondering is that one of the reasons why the “High Negotiations Committee (HNC)” backed by these Saudis walked away from talks or said that they are halting the talks at very least.
Glenn: Yes, of course, because the narrative has totally fallen apart on the part of those who have waged this war against Syria, the United Sates, actually the West and Saudi Arabia. It has completely fallen apart. The entire world understands what is going on here. The disillusion that these wild dogs that have ripped Syria to shreds, that these are freedom fighters, has just completely lost all legitimacy and so what else can the Saudis do but to walk away from this. It is not just embarrassing; it is humiliating; and for good reasons, because now the Saudis, especially in the eyes of the entire Islamic world, they are shown to be the traitors and the dogs that they are before the eyes of almost 2 billion Muslims worldwide.
