The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has beefed up security around New York City and, in particular, at the French consulate as the deadly attacks in Paris have left at least 158 dead with as many as 100 others taken hostage.
The NYPD is weighing further responses late Friday afternoon, with security officials saying the extra security is being added out of an abundance of caution.
The NYPD told CBS2 it is assessing circumstances overseas with CBS2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer reporting that the city police officials are meeting to evaluate the intelligence they are receiving from Paris.
During what seems to be a series of coordinated attacks in Paris late Friday, at least six shootings took place in the city and three explosions happened at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.
Following the attacks, New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he has directed city police and other forces to stay alert for any possible similar attack in the city.
"Tonight I have directed New York State law enforcement to remain vigilant in the wake of these senseless attacks. The New York State Police, the New York State Intelligence Center and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services are actively monitoring the situation for any implications in New York State and remain in constant communication with their local and federal partners."
According to reports, the NYPD's Strategic Response Group (SRG) has been assigned with to patrol key locations across the city.
The SRG unit of up to 350 officers with heavier gear will be conducting both counterterrorism patrols and protests at high-risk areas of the city, like Times Square.
President Barack Obama condemned the attacks as an "outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians.''
