Press TV has interviewed Rodney Shakespeare, a political commentator in London, for his views on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s argument that the UK should stop its airstrikes in Iraq.
Following is a full transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Jeremy Corbyn has spoken and he has given his views on this. Do you agree with him?
Shakespeare: Yes. Jeremy Corbyn understands that the underlying problem is that this country and the Americans and the Israelis are hand in glove with Saudi Arabia; that we have caused the ISIS; that we have caused the Daesh and at this very moment, we are supporting the Saudis in their promotion of Daesh and in their destruction of Yemen. And Jeremy Corbyn’s instincts are that the first thing we have to do is to stop the promotion of Daesh being done by our country.
Only yesterday was it, we were opening another base in Bahrain to support these autocratic Daesh-loving, Daesh-promoting autocratic regimes in the Middle East and I have to say that Hilary Benn, Labour’s shadow foreign secretary, he is one of the old-paradigm politicians who all the time are supporting Daesh, supporting Israel, supporting Saudi Arabia and as a result, they are not really in the situation of wanting to get rid of Daesh; they want it to actually go on. And that is why the British bombing was ineffective, and that is why the Americans have been outmaneuvered by Russia.
Press TV: So, Corbyn has spoken and given his views; what can he do to make his views produce tangible results when it comes to the British posturing on both Iraq and Syria?
Shakespeare: He can do what he is doing. All the main media, all the main parties are attacking Corbyn in an extraordinary way because they know that he represents probably about 30 percent of the British population. What is last is freeing himself from the lies and propaganda coming from Fox News, Sky News, BBC, Daily Telegraph and the rest of them.
He must stand firm. He is a very brave man. He has friends right out there in the population and he will win and he will win even against his own shadow foreign secretary, Hilary Benn. Vote on Jeremy Corbyn, stand firm, you will soon have a majority of the population with you.
