Cyclone Chapala has killed one and injured nine others after hitting the Yemeni island of Socotra and is on its way towards the war-ravaged country’s mainland, officials say.

The rare and rapidly intensifying storm has also destroyed some 100 homes, uprooted countless trees, and sunk scores of fishing boats, local security officials said on Sunday.

Residents were forced to take shelter in caves or local schools as heavy rain, strong winds and towering waves pummeled the secluded Island.

"We are expecting a true disaster to befall us," said a resident of the island. "and only God knows whether we will last until tomorrow."

The island lies some 368 kilometers off Yemen’s mainland and is known for its unique vegetation and ecosystems.

On Friday, the UN’s weather agency warned that rainfalls that come with the storm equal one year of regular downpour in Yemen.

According to Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System, Chapala will reach the Yemeni coast around mid-day on Tuesday.
