Press TV has interviewed Jeff J. Brown, an author and geopolitical analyst for 44days.net Radio Sinoland, in Beijing, to discuss the trilateral summit held between the leaders of China, Japan and South Korea in Seoul.
Following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: How significant were the Seoul talks?
Brown: Well they are very significant because as you mentioned, these three countries represent 20 percent of the world’s people, 20 percent of the world’s GDP, 20 percent of the world’s foreign direct investment, they are sitting on 47 percent of the world’s foreign exchange reserves. Unfortunately for them it is mainly US treasury debt and so this is a big deal.
The problem is of course the United States does not want this to happen. They do not want the free trade zone with China, South Korea and Japan to happen … and the last thing Washington wants is for these three countries to jump into bed together and I can promise you the United States will be doing everything it can to try to undermine their efforts.
Press TV: What could top the agenda of future cooperation between these three Asian powerhouses?
Brown: It all boils down to trade, investment. I live here in Beijing. There are hundreds of thousands of Koreans and Japanese living in China. Just like for the United States and for Europe, China has become the manufacturing powerhouse for Korean and Japanese businesses. Higher and higher level technology is moving from Korea and Japan into China and so it is all about trade and all about investment and they will continue to push that with this free trade zone and obviously the Chinese inspired recipe is the counter attack to America’s Trans-Pacific Partnership which should actually be called total plunder and pillage for all the poor people who have signed that pledge like Japan. At least Korea was intelligent enough not to get involved in the TPP but it is all about trade and investment.
