A fire at a crowded club has left at least 27 people dead and more than 160 injured in the Romanian capital, Bucharest.
The fire ripped Friday night through the club packed with hundreds of people, most of them teenagers and young people, officials said on Saturday.
The injured people were being treated in several hospitals in Bucharest.
Hospital sources announced that at least 25 of the injured were in critical condition and the death toll could rise.
"This is the worst tragedy of its kind" in Bucharest, said the secretary of state for interior affairs, Raed Arafat.
Witnesses said fireworks, let off as part of the show, set fire to decorations causing a thick smoke in the underground club located in a basement.
"People were fainting, they were fainting because of the smoke. It was total chaos, people were trampled," an eyewitness told local media.
"People could not get out of the club because there was only one exit open and the stampede happened immediately," said another eyewitness.
A second emergency exit door remained closed during the incident, media reported.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
President Klaus Iohannis said he was "shocked" by the incident, adding that he was in "deep pain.”
"It is a very sad moment for our nation," he said in a post on his Facebook page.
