The United Nations rights chief has accused Czech authorities of systematically violating human rights laws to stop the flow of refugees.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said Prague routinely detains asylum seekers for 40 days and in some cases for up to three months. Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein stressed that detention of refugees must be strictly a measure of last resort under international law. He noted that detention of children on the sole basis of their immigration status is not justifiable. The UN rights chief further described the conditions of the detainees as degrading. He said Czech authorities, themselves, describe the condition of refugee detention facilities as being worse than a prison.
