US Vice President Joe Biden has said that he will not enter the presidential race to challenge leading Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

"I believe we're out of time, the time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination," Biden announced on Wednesday at the White House, standing with President Barack Obama and his wife Jill at his side.

"While I am not going to be a candidate, I will speak out clearly and forcefully as to where we stand as a party and where we need to go as a nation," he added.

He made the announcement despite the fact that nearly half of Democratic voters wanted Biden to enter the presidential race and challenge Clinton, according to a poll released last week.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that 48 percent of Democrats surveyed think Biden should officially launch a presidential campaign, compared with 30 percent who said he should stay out of the race.

Clinton is competing against only three Democrats and independent Senator Bernie Sanders, for the Democratic Party's nomination. Only Sanders is considered at all competitive in the early primaries.
