Top Biden aide indicates 2016 decision coming soon

US Vice President Joe Biden

A top aide of US Vice President Joe Biden has indicated that Biden will pretty soon make a decision about the 2016 presidential election and provided some details what a potential campaign might entail.

In a letter sent to former staffers on Thursday, former Delaware Senator Ted Kaufman, one of Biden's closest confidants indicated the vice president is "aware of the practical demands of making a final decision soon."

He explained in the letter, which was first obtained by the Los Angeles Times and Associated Press, how Biden would launch a positive campaign focusing on the revival of the middle class, according to Yahoo News.

“If he runs, he will run because of his burning conviction that we need to fundamentally change the balance in our economy and the political structure to restore the ability of the middle class to get ahead,” Kaufman wrote.

“What kind of campaign? An optimistic campaign. A campaign from the heart. A campaign consistent with his values, our values, and the values of the American people. And I think it's fair to say, knowing him as we all do, that it won't be a scripted affair -- after all, it's Joe,” he wrote.

According to a recent poll, nearly half of Democratic voters want Biden to enter the presidential race and challenge leading Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, who is competing against only three Democrats and independent Senator Bernie Sanders.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that 48 percent of Democrats surveyed think Biden should officially launch a presidential campaign, compared with 30 percent who said he should stay out of the race.

But support for Biden’s entry into the race does not translate into equal interest for his candidacy.

Only 17 percent of those surveyed said Biden would be their first choice for president, while 46 percent would back Clinton, the poll found.

Biden would also run behind Sanders, who remains the favorite of 25 percent of Democrat voter that were surveyed.

However, more voters would be likely to support Biden once he has officially announces his candidacy, according to Steve Schale, a Democratic strategist in Florida.
