Four people have lost their lives and several others have sustained injuries in an explosion at a Russian oil depot in Tajikistan’s western district of Rudaki.

The blast at the oil storage facility, used by the local branch of Russia’s Gazprom Neft, took place on Tuesday evening, Tajik officials said.

The injured were rushed to hospital following the incident, the officials said, without providing further details.

Tajikistan’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that a tank at the oil depot, located near the capital, Dushanbe, went off due to a failure to observe safety measures during welding work.

Gazprom Neft, a subsidiary of Russia’s top energy giant Gazprom, utilizes the facility to store fuel.

An ex-Soviet country in Central Asia, Tajikistan depends on Russia for the bulk of its fuel imports. The mountainous, landlocked country borders war-ravaged Afghanistan to its south and China to its east.
