Two killed, five injured in Afghanistan chopper crash

An Afghan military helicopter

At least two Afghan soldiers were killed and five others injured when a military helicopter operated by the Afghan Air Force went down in the country’s central province of Bamyan.

Abdul Rahman Ahmadi, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said the aircraft was flying from Bamyan to the southern province of Kandar on Monday when it crashed in the Qazan district of Bamyan Province, situated some 200 kilometers (124 miles) northwest of the capital, Kabul.

He added that three of the injured are in critical condition, stressing that the helicopter crash happened due to a technical glitch and that no hostile fire was involved.

The development came a day after a British military helicopter crashed in Kabul, killing five people, including two UK troops, and injuring five others.

The UK Puma Mk 2 helicopter reportedly crashed in what officials of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) called a "non-hostile incident."

200 Taliban killed

Meanwhile, Afghan army troops have killed nearly 200 Taliban militants and wounded more than two dozen others in a series of mop-up operations conducted across the war-torn country over the past 24 hours.

The Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement on Monday that 190 militants were killed and 26 others injured in a series of operations carried out in the provinces of Badakhshan, Daykundi, Farah, Ghazni, Helmand, Herat, Kandahar, Kapisa, Kunduz, Nangarhar, Takhar, Uruzgan and Zabul.

The statement added that 23 Taliban Militants were also arrested during the offensives, while five Afghan soldiers lost their lives.

Afghan soldiers also confiscated light and heavy weapons and defused several rounds of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The Taliban militant group in Afghanistan has made no comment on the report so far.

Afghanistan is gripped by insecurity nearly 14 years after the United States and its allies attacked the country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. Although the attack overthrew the Taliban, many areas across Afghanistan still face violence and insecurity.
