Live updates on 8.3-magnitude quake in Chile

A massive 8.3-magnitude earthquake has jolted the South American country of Chile, with a confirmed death toll of at least five as of yet.

The quake struck in the evening on Wednesday.

(0348 GMT) Chilean Deputy Interior Minister Mahmoud Aleuy provides a new death toll from the quake, saying that at least five people have been killed and a million evacuated. He also said that the figures were preliminary.

Aleuy says one person has also gone missing following the massive earthquake in Chile.

(0316 GMT) Some coastal towns are reported to have been flooded with water from small tsunami waves.

(0303 GMT) Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet confirms media reports that three people have been killed in the quake, saying she plans to visit the affected areas in the South American country.

(0224 GMT) The mayor of the inland city of Illapel, some 46 kilometers from the epicenter of the quake, said that drinking water and electricity have been cut off in the city following the incident.

(0224 GMT) Thousands of people are evacuating buildings as alert sirens are heard across danger zones.

(0224 GMT) According to the AFP, a tsunami alert has also caused growing concern among the people in Argentina and El Salvador, who fear that they may be affected by destructive waves.

(2254 GMT, Wednesday) A 8.3-magnitude quake strikes at a depth of eight kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

“We fled our building and everything started to move very strong,” Pablo Cifuentes, a resident of Chile’s capital Santiago, said.
