Afghan security forces have arrested nine members of the Taliban militant group in the southern province of Kandahar.

In a Saturday statement, Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security (NDS) said the militants had been detained during special operations in Kandahar.

The NDS did not specify the exact date of the arrests but said the detainees were involved in various forms of terrorist activities, including roadside bombings in Kandahar.

The NDS also said the militants had confessed to their crimes in the early stages of investigation.

In recent months, Afghan security forces have stepped up attacks against Taliban hideouts across the war-torn country.

There has been a major surge in violence across Afghanistan over the past months after the Taliban militants pledged to expand attacks against Afghan and foreign forces as part of the militants’ so-called spring offensive in late April.

Afghanistan is experiencing insecurity nearly 14 years after US and its NATO allies invaded the Asian country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.

The US-led offensive unseated the Taliban from power, but many areas in the country are still beset with armed clashes, bombings and killings.

The US-led combat mission in Afghanistan ended on December 31, 2014. However, at least 13,200 foreign forces, mainly from the United States, have remained in the country in what Washington calls a support mission. NATO says the forces will focus mainly on counterterrorism operations and training Afghan soldiers and policemen.
