Palestinians have come out in force to voice support for a Palestinian prisoner, who has lost consciousness after going on an unlimited hunger strike.
On Sunday, the 62nd day of the protest action staged by Israeli-held Muhammad Nasr al-Din Allan, hundreds of Palestinians took to the streets in the city of Nablus in the north of the Tel Aviv-occupied West Bank, waving Palestinian flags and holding up his photos, the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency reported.
The demonstrators chanted slogans and raised placards, calling for the prisoner’s freedom. The rally was joined by representatives from different Palestinian factions.
Addressing the rally, Jihad Ramadan, an official with the Palestinian faction Fatah, urged the international community to save Allan's life.
Israel's Supreme Court is hearing a petition on Monday to free the prisoner on health grounds. Allan fell into a coma on the 60th day of his hunger strike.
Tel Aviv, which alleges that the inmate is being held for his activities with the Palestinian resistance movement Islamic Jihad, recently passed a law that allows a judge to sanction force-feeding of prisoners.
Since last week, several rallies have been staged in support of Palestinian inmates, who resort to staging hunger strikes in protest against their administrative detention, a sort of imprisonment without trial or charges that allows Israel to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months.
