A young man who killed 12 people and injured 70 others at a movie theater in the United States has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

James Holmes opened fire at a theater in Aurora, Colorado, in July 2012.

A Colorado jury on Friday did not reach a unanimous decision on death penalty in the shooting case.

Last month, Holmes was convicted of 24 counts of first-degree murder -- two for each of the slain victims -- and 140 counts of attempted murder.

According to his lawyers, Holmes suffered from schizophrenia and he was legally insane when he killed the people.

"The death of a seriously mentally ill man is not justice," said defense attorney Tamara Brady.

However, the jury rejected that defense in finding the 27-year-old Holmes guilty.

District Attorney George Brauchler said that death pentaly was "the only appropriate sentence."

Mass shootings are very rampant in the United States and liberal gun laws are blamed for the issue.

In June, another young white man Dylann Roof shot dead nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Last week, Roof pleaded not guilty to federal hate crime charges. He was charged with murder over the killing of the African-American people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The 21-year-old man was arrested one day after the attack in North Carolina.

According to law enforcement officials, he admitted to the killings of the black people.

He could face life imprisonment or the death penalty if found guilty.
