Monsoon-triggered landslide leaves 20 dead in NE India
A landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains has claimed the lives of at least 20 people in northeastern India bordering Myanmar, police say.
Police officer Herojit Singh said the deadly landslide occurred on Saturday in the village of Joumol, located in Chandel district of Manipur State.
“Six to seven houses came under the landslide and the village authorities informed us of about 20 casualties,” Singh said, adding that police reinforcements had difficulty to reach the affected area.
Meanwhile, India’s Home Minister Rajnath Singh noted that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been dispatched to the region to help with the rescue operations and move the survivors to relief camps.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs of India Kiren Rijiju is also expected to visit Manipur on Monday to assess the situation there.
Landslides are common during India’s annual monsoon season, which lasts from June to September.
Over the last few days, Manipur has been witnessing continuous rain, which has destroyed several mud houses and left thousands of Indians homeless.
