‘UK blacks, minorities doing worse than whites over budget’
A new study by a British think tank shows that the UK’s benefit cuts will have the worst effect on blacks and minority ethnic Britons including Muslims.
According to the survey by the Runnymede Trust, the Conservative Tory budget risks widening Britain’s racial divide by making millions of minority ethnic people poorer at a faster rate than their white counterparts.
Four million black and minority ethnic people could be left with less income, with one of the worst affected groups being British Muslims.
The study has revealed that minority groups are around twice as likely to lose out as white Britons from the Conservative budget unveiled nearly three weeks ago.
The report says the budget will increase racial inequality, with minority ethnic people worst hit by cuts to tax credits, new limits on child benefit and the lowering of the benefits cap.
It also warns that child poverty rates among minority ethnic groups may rise even more after the 2015 budget.
Now Rodney Shakespeare, professor of economics, says there is “a massive cut” in the UK budget which will significantly impact public welfare.
Runnymede wants the government to carry out a formal audit of the effect the budget will have on racial equality, called an equalities impact assessment, the Guardian says, noting that the Treasury did not respond when asked if it had carried out an equalities assessment of the 2015 budget.
