Several Jewish groups in the US have planned to “spend tens of millions of dollars on a lobbying campaign to quash” a recent nuclear agreement between Iran and the world powers, according to a report.
An official at one Jewish group revealed the plan, The Hill reported on Wednesday.
Iran and the six world powers concluded the nuclear negotiations in Vienna on Tuesday.
Israel immediately reacted to the agreement and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described it as a “historic mistake.”
The US Congress now has 60 days to review the text of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and vote to either approve or disapprove of the text.
President Barack Obama had earlier said that he would veto any legislation from lawmakers that "prevents the successful implementation of the deal."
Obama is trying to convince the Democratic senators to vote in favor of the agreement.
Democratic Senator Charles Schumer, who is famous as a pro-Israel politician, said he would review the deal thoroughly.
“Supporting or opposing this agreement is not a decision to be made lightly, and I plan to carefully study the agreement before making an informed decision,” he said in a statement.
A major rally is set to be held next week in Manhattan to put pressure on lawmakers to vote against the agreement. The July 22 event is expected to draw thousands of people.
Meanwhile, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) called on US lawmakers to reject the conclusion of the nuclear talks.
