Malaysian police are investigating the leak of confidential documents that could be part of an economic conspiracy to topple Prime Minister Najib Razak.

National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said on Monday that the leak of the classified documents allegedly showing millions of dollars were funneled into the premier’s account could constitute "economic sabotage" against the country and be part of a conspiracy to topple Najib.

“These criminal acts are very serious and raise national security implications,” Abu Bakar said in a statement. “The Royal Malaysian Police have not eliminated the possibility of a conspiracy to subvert Malaysia’s democratic process and topple the prime minister.”

The leaked documents on the alleged multi-million dollar corruption scandal are allegedly from a Malaysian government investigation into state investment company 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Abu Bakr said that all members of the task force investigating 1MDB, including central bank personnel, will be questioned to identify who leaked the documents and whether the documents are genuine or have been doctored.

The documents allegedly show that USD 700 million was wired from entities linked to 1MDB into Najib's accounts.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing in relation to 1MDB.
