Turkey's parliament has elected Ismet Yilmaz from the ruling party as the new speaker of parliament.

Yilmaz is a leading member of the Justice and Development Party (AKP).

He won 258 votes - all from the AKP representatives - in the fourth and final round of voting in the 550-seat Grand National Assembly.

Yilmaz is 53 years old and the outgoing defense minister.

Last month, general elections were held in Turkey, with the AKP failing to obtain an absolute majority in parliament for the first time since coming to power in 2002.

June's parliamentary election result is widely seen by analysts as a political blow to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had hoped his AKP party would receive an absolute majority and be able to change the constitution to boost his position.

On June 21, Erdogan called on the country's leading parties to swiftly form a coalition government or otherwise face snap elections.

"It's possible this process may take until the middle of August. I believe Turkey cannot endure such a loss of time, so I encourage the formation of a new government as soon as possible," said the president.

Erdogan added, “If politicians are unable to sort this out, then the people are the only recourse to resolve this."

Turkey's opposition parties have so far refused to join a coalition government with the AKP.
