Press TV has conducted an interview with Anthony Hall, a professor of globalization at Lethbridge University, about the Takfiri ISIL militant group abducting more than 1,200 children from various districts of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: When we look at this situation, it just seems to get worse every day the type of news that is coming out when we are talking about ISIL, now talking about them kidnapping over 1,200 kids. What is it going to take to stop this type of insanity that we are witnessing almost on a daily basis?
Hall: Of course this kind of abuse of international law, violation of international law, this is played upon in the West. In Canada here, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is running for re-election, pointing to the evil ISIL and no doubt this abuse of child soldiers, this induction of child soldiers will be used and exploited.
First, it is not reported properly in Canada but the Canadian government itself was involved in recruiting for ISIL. So this cynical unbelievably diabolical double game being played where ISIL is being created by the same western powers, by the inheritors of the imperialism. This is yet just another frontier of this cynical game.
Press TV: We have seen this many times you are talking about this diabolical double game that is being played by the West and we see it in so many places. For example right now one of the main problems, let’s say with the migrants and trying to make it from northern Africa to Europe basically because their countries were destabilized to begin with by these same western countries that caused the problem, but yet those individuals who are coming from this region are basically painted out to be terrorists or loving violence where the Europeans or the American are portrayed to be the saviors of these poor people when actually the problem initiated elsewhere. What is the key?
Hall: Well this is an old pattern in European imperialism. Edward Said wrote about the instrumentalization of Islam. W saw this in the Cold War where Islam was exploited by the West within the Soviet Union because of course the religious convictions of Islamic people could be used against Communism. It was exploited in Afghanistan with the so-called al-Qaeda and the Mujahideen. This instrumentalization, this abuse, this funding and co-optation of different factions of Islam and the use of divide and conquer strategies to advance imperialism in the Islamic world, this is a well-established, well-known pattern but of course the level of propaganda and psychological warfare is reaching new frontiers of insidiousness here in the West and of course most people are easily played and the war machine of course requires enemies and Islam is the new source to produce a constant flow of new enemies.
