The white gunman who killed nine black people in a church in the United States reportedly wanted to kill himself, but he had no more bullets.
The son of a victim who spoke with a survivor said he was told Dylann Roof tried to commit suicide following the massacre, but he had run out of bullets.
"He put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger but there was just no bullets left," said Kevin Singleton, whose mother was among the victims.
"I'm assuming he wanted to take his own life," he added.
Singleton, who spoke with the oldest survivor of the incident, said Roof killed Rev. Clementa Pinckney first and then targeted other people at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
The 21-year-old suspect was arrested one day after the crime in North Carolina.
Roof has been charged with nine counts of homicide and illegal possession of a firearm.
He confessed to the crime during his first court appearance on Friday.
South Carolina State Senator Clementa Pinckney was also among the dead.
The other victims were Myra Thompson, 59, Tywanza Sanders, 26, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, 45, DePayne Middleton, 49, Cynthia Hurd, 54, Ethel Lance, 70, Susie Jackson, 87, and Reverend Daniel Simmons, 74.
The Justice Department announced that the white suspect is facing a federal investigation that could classify the crime as a hate crime or an act of terror.
Next court appearances are scheduled for October 23 and February 5.
