Somali forces foil al-Shabab attack, kill 4 militants

The AFP file photo shows a security officer trying to keep a crowd of onlookers back as they gather to see the bodies of suspected al-shabab militants involved in the Moi University attack at the mortuary in the northeastern town of Garissa.

Somali security forces have foiled an attack by the al-Shabab militant group in the center of the country,  killing four of its members, officials say.

Security forces stopped four al-Shabab militants, who were trying to “storm the conference center” in the town of Adado in the central Galgaduud region of Somalia, some 500 kilometers (310 miles) north of the capital, Mogadishu, security official Mohamed Sugule said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, another security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that three Somali soldiers were also killed in the attack.

The meeting was hosting more than 400 politicians and leaders to discuss the constitution for the Galgaduud and Mudug regions to form a regional government.

According to Mohamed Osman Yusuf, a spokesman for the Somali National Intelligence, none of the delegates was injured.

Al-Shabab militants claimed responsibility for the deadly attack in a post on its official website.

The terrorist assault comes at the onset of Islam's holy month of Ramadan.

The al-Qaeda-linked Takfiri group has been held accountable for violence and chaos in Somalia since 2006, targeting key government and security figures in the country.

Somali government soldiers, as well as forces from the African Union Mission to Somalia, also known as AMISOM, have pushed the militants out of Mogadishu and other major cities in the country. The UN force is mainly comprised of troops from Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Sierra Leone and Kenya.
