Yemen war endangers stability in Middle East: Iranian diplomat

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs

A senior Iranian diplomat has called for an immediate halt to the Saudi airstrikes on Yemen, warning that military aggression only jeopardizes stability in the Middle East.

“Resorting to the military approach in dealing with the internal political crisis in Yemen is a mistake and will have no result but to increase extremism and terrorism and imperiling the security of our region,” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Yemen in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Tuesday.

He underscored the necessity of an immediate halt to the Saudi strikes against the defenseless Yemenis and the end of the Saudi-imposed blockade of Yemen, particularly ahead of the fasting month of Ramadan, which starts on Thursday.

He strongly criticized the destruction of the infrastructure in Yemen in the Saudi strikes and stressed the need for unity in Yemen and respecting its territorial integrity.

Amir-Abdollahian also reaffirmed Iran’s support for Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue in the Swiss city of Geneva, where rival Yemeni groups are holding peace talks.

He called on OIC member states to fulfill their religious and humanitarian obligations vis-à-vis Yemeni people.

Amir-Abdollahian left the OIC meeting when Yemen’s former fugitive President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi took the podium to deliver a speech.

Foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Turkey and Afghanistan as well as Secretary General of the OIC Iyad Ameen Madani addressed the meeting on Tuesday.

The OIC meeting came as Yemen’s political factions have gathered in Geneva for talks under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). The talks in the Swiss city aim to secure a ceasefire and accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Yemeni people.

Saudi Arabia started its aggression against Yemen almost three months ago. According to the UN, the conflict in Yemen has claimed more than 2,600 lives since March.
