A bomb explosion near Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, has claimed the lives of at least three members of the Somali security forces.
Hassan Abdulahi, a Somali security official, said on Tuesday that the bomb attack was carried out on the outskirts of Mogadishu, near the Hawa Abdi area, and targeted a vehicle of the security forces.
The official did not specify the number of those killed. However, an eyewitness, Ibrahim Ismail, said the blast left “three soldiers dead and three others wounded seriously.”
Officials blamed the al-Shabab militant group for the blast.
Meanwhile, an al-Shabab spokesman has reportedly claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Al-Shabab militants have been behind several deadly attacks targeting key government and security figures in Somalia since 2006.
Somali government soldiers, as well as forces from the African Union Mission to Somalia, also known as AMISOM, have pushed the militants out of Mogadishu and other major cities in the country. The UN force largely consists of troops from Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Sierra Leone and Kenya.
