Apple has announced iOS 9, the latest version of its iPhone and iPad operating system with improved security and battery life.

The new iOS, to be released for the general public in autumn, was announced at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, California, on Monday.

The update will sport a fresh look and new tools, and will also require less free space for a wireless upgrade, an issue which former upgrades had.

Other improvements include hydration and ultraviolet tracking for health-related Apps.

Apple's new mobile operating system will be compatible with all devices currently running iOS 8, although older devices may not be able to run some of the new features.

The operating system will be available to developers on Monday and a public beta version will be released in July.

During the conference, Apple also unveiled its new subscription music streaming service, and also announced that its contactless mobile payment system, Apple Pay, will to be launched in the UK as of July.

Apple Music is set to be launched in 100 countries on June 30 and will be initially available only to apple users and later on in the year to those using Android -- the company’s main rival.

Chief executive Tim Cook refereed to the new service as "the next chapter in music" which "will change the way you experience music forever."

The Apple Pay system, which lets Apple Watch or iPhone users carry out cashless payments with their devices, was initially launched in the US in 2014 along with the release of the iPhone 6.

Apple also announced the revamping of its current news service, Newstand, with a new app called News, which will fetch specifically designed content from media organizations such as Guardian, ESPN, the New York Times, Conde Nast, the Daily Mail, and Hearst.
