British Prime Minister David Cameron is under pressure from more than 50 Tory MPs as they warn of a campaign to leave the European Union unless the PM secures fundamental reforms to Britain’s relationships with the EU.
The group, Conservatives for Britain, run by Steven Baker MP, is hoping to gain the support of 100 Tory MPs. Former ministers Owen Paterson and John Redwood are among the members campaigning to leave the EU unless Cameron is successful in his mission to reform Britain’s relationship with the EU.
Steven Baker has warned EU officials to take Britain’s concerns seriously. He said, "We wish David Cameron every success but, unless senior EU officials awake to the possibility that one of the EU's largest members is serious about a fundamental change in our relationship, our recommendation to British voters seems likely to be exit."
Former Tory cabinet minister Owen Paterson has said that the Eurosceptic voices within the ruling Tory party and beyond cannot be ignored. He believes that MPs should be allowed to campaign to leave the EU if they are not happy with a deal secured by the Prime Minister.
Paterson said that if a free vote “is not allowed, these people - if they have got any character about them at all and are interested in the future of their country - should stand down and campaign according to their conscience.”
But many people in Britain and across the EU want the UK to remain a part of European bloc.
Rafal Trzaskowski, Poland's secretary of state for European affairs believes that Britain “cannot keep all the goodies and forget about the costs.”
