The Israeli regime has conducted a massive drill that simulates situations with barrages of missiles or rockets from three geographical directions, namely Syria, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, Press TV reports.
Rocket sirens were heard in several cities across the occupied territories on Tuesday, while Israeli military officials asked settlers to rush to bomb shelters to test their ability to seek cover in case of real rocket attacks.
Reports showed Israelis were playing out various emergency and wartime scenarios as part of the drill.
The Israeli regime conducts such drills annually. Observers, however, say this year it is an intensive and large-scale drill.
“There’s clear anxiety in Israel because of what’s going on in the region. Israel always prepares for an attack and it has scenarios. [That] is why the drill has depended on an issue that rockets could be fired from three directions at the same time…,” said Wasef Erekat, a retired Palestinian major general and an expert on military affairs based in Ramallah, the occupied West Bank.
Jalal Rumaneh, an expert on Israeli affairs, said, “Israeli officials know that even if regional powers have a lot of differences and disagreements, they will agree at the end of the day on one thing: that the enemy is one, and that is Israel. Tel Aviv is also aware that the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah is able to open a new front in northern Israel, if necessary.”
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said Monday that the Tel Aviv regime should take seriously potential moves against Israel by the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah.
Barak said that Hezbollah has more than 100,000 missiles which could pose a serious threat to the very existence of the Israeli entity. He said that the Israeli regime has “never had to cope with 100 thousand rockets and we have not even begun to deal with their accuracy.”
