West miscalculating in Mideast policies: Iranian official

A high-ranking Iranian official says the West is seriously mistaken in its calculations if it believes it can provide security for the Israeli regime by inciting crises in the Middle East.

“If Western countries are attempting to provide security for the Zionist regime (Israel) by creating crises in the region, they are making a miscalculation that cannot be undone. Terrorism is a double-edged sword, which recent experiences show will cut open the chest of those who support it, too,” Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said in Tehran on Tuesday.

He made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Syrian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham.

“Syria is at the forefront of defending Muslim countries against the Zionist regime and unrestrained Takfiri terrorism, and undermining it (Syria) will lead to the situation becoming critical and uncontrollable in all neighboring states and the region,” the Iranian official said.

Shamkhani added that Washington and its allies are violating UN Security Council resolutions by training and equipping Takfiri terrorists, criticizing them for imposing sanctions against the Syrian government and people rather than stopping financial aid and arms provisions for the terrorists wreaking havoc in Syria.

He also praised the Syrian government, armed forces and nation for their resistance against numerous terrorist groups, saying that Takfiri terrorists can only be confronted through dialogue and cooperation among Muslim states as well as the non-interference of trans-regional countries.

Laham, for his part, praised Iran’s all-out support for Syria, and condemned certain regional countries over their support for the extremist Takfiris operating inside the Arab country.

He said there is no strong will to fight terrorism. The United Nations and the Security Council are just apathetically witnessing the massacre of innocent people at the hands of Takfiri groups, the senior Syrian official said.

He underlined that Syria will continue fighting terrorism, and relies on the strong will of its nation, government forces as well as allies to accomplish this end.

Over 222,000 people have died in the conflict in Syria since March 2011, according to reports.

More than 3.8 million Syrians have also escaped the violence and taken refuge in neighboring countries, namely Jordan and Lebanon. Over 7.2 million others have become internally displaced, according to the United Nations.
