Afghan forces kill 33 Taliban militants in mop-up operations
Afghan security forces have killed more than 30 Taliban militants and wounded several others during clean-up operations across the country over the past 24 hours.
The Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement on Sunday that 33 militants were killed and 42 others injured in a series of operations carried out in the provinces of Helmand, Kapisa, Kunduz, Logar, Paktika, Sar-e-Pul and Uruzgan.
The statement added that as many as five militants were also arrested during the offensives. It, however, did not mention whether there were any casualties on the side of the Afghan forces.
Afghan soldiers also confiscated light and heavy weapons, and defused 25 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the process.
Roadside bomb kills Afghan police chief
A senior police officer was killed and two others wounded in a bomb explosion that destroyed their vehicle in Afghanistan’s northern province of Jawzjan.
Provincial police chief, Brigadier General Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani, said the incident took place in the Qush Tepa district of the province on Sunday morning, when a patrol car ran over a buried explosive device.
Jawzjani said police commander Sultan Mohammad instantly died, adding that two policemen also sustained injuries in the attack.
No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the act of terror. However, such incidents are usually blamed on the Taliban militants, who have relied on roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices as the most lethal weapons in their attacks against Afghan forces, foreign troops, and civilians.
