At least two people, including a senior local official, have reportedly been killed in a roadside bomb explosion in Afghanistan’s southern province of Uruzgan.

Dost Mohammad Nayab, spokesman for the provincial governor of Uruzgan Province, said Saturday that Mohammad Ismail Haqyar, district chief of Charcheno, was killed on his way to his office.

The official’s bodyguard also lost his life and another person sustained injuries in the attack, he said.

An investigation has been initiated into the case, added Nayab, without giving more details.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Taliban militants often use similar assaults targeting Afghan security forces and government officials across the war-torn country.

Afghanistan faces a security challenge years after the United States and its allies invaded the country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed Taliban from power, but many areas in the country are still witnessing violence.
