Collective efforts necessary for anti-terror fight: Iranian official

A senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official says the fight against terrorism requires the cooperation of all countries.

After the wave of "Islamic Awakening" in the Arab world, certain states turned to terrorism as a means to destabilize the regional security, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a Monday meeting with the General Director for Foreign Policy at Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Labbé Villa.

This is while the campaign against terror necessitates the collective cooperation of world countries, Amir-Abdollahian added.

The Iranian official expressed regret about some countries' failure to adopt a "constructive approach" to regional developments, saying their behavior has posed a threat to the security and stability of the region.

Amir-Abdollahian also commended Chile’s “positive and balanced” position on the issue of Palestine and the situation in Yemen and the ongoing Saudi aggression against the country.

Saudi Arabia launched its airstrikes on Yemen on March 26 - without a UN mandate - in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement, which currently controls the capital, Sana’a, and other major provinces, and to restore power to Yemen’s fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

According to Yemen's Freedom House Foundation, the Saudi strikes have claimed the lives of at least 3,979 Yemeni people so far while more than 6,887 others have been wounded.

Amir-Abdollahian further pointed to the relations between Iran and Chile, saying that Tehran and Santiago have good cooperation in various fields.

The Chilean official, for his part, said Tehran plays a leading role in maintaining stability and security in the region.

Chile believes that differences should be settled through peaceful ways without resorting to force and only via political dialog, Labbé Villa said.
