Leader congratulates Iran Taekwondos on winning world title

Iran’s Mehdi Khodabakhshi won gold in the men’s minus 80 kg category of the World Taekwondo Championship in Russia on May 18, 2015.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has congratulated Iranian taekwondokas on  winning the world title.

In a message issued late Monday, the Leader appreciated members of the Iranian team for adding to their previous tally of the prestigious international title.

“I congratulate the taekwondokas and authorities with the national team of our beloved country on winning the world championship title and thank you for hoisting the holy flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran once again,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in the message released by his official website.

Iran made an early gain in the World Taekwondo Championship in Russia on Monday after one of its athletes, Mehdi Khodabakhshi, reached the semifinal match in the minus-80kg category. That gave Iran the minimum points needed to claim the title as representatives of other contender teams, namely South Korea, Russia and Uzbekistan, were eliminated on their way to reaching the pre-final match.

The games, contested by taekwondo fighters from 144 nations, end in coming hours with contenders facing off in semifinal and final matches of the two remaining weight classes.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also paid tribute to the victorious Iranian athletes, expressing hope that the triumph could be replicated by the Iranian youth in other fields.

“I congratulate the big Iranian nation, the virtuous champions and coaches and managers of the national taekwondo team on the victory of our athletes,” Rouhani said in the message, appreciating the players for, “once again”,  making the Iranian people happy.
