Iran supports all Iraqis against terrorism: Official

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs

A senior Iranian diplomat says Iran supports all Iraqi people, including Shias and Sunnis, in the fight against terrorism.

“Tehran strongly supports Iraq in the fight against terrorism,” Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, said on Wednesday.

The diplomat further stressed that Iran “helps all Iraqi people, including the Shia and Sunni” in countering terrorism.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been in chaos since ISIL started its campaign of terror in early June 2014. The terrorists are in control of the second-largest city of Mosul and have swept through parts of the country.

Iraq’s army has been joined by Kurdish forces, Shia volunteers and Sunni tribesmen in operations to drive the ISIL terrorists out of the areas the Takfiri militants have seized.

He underscored the unrest in other regional countries affects the security of Iraq and the whole region, adding, “any form of negligence against terrorist movements in Yemen and Syria will have negative effects on Iraq and the region.”

He also called on all countries in the region especially in the area of the Persian Gulf to join forces and collectively provide security for the region.

“Tehran regards the insecurity of each of the countries in the region as the insecurity of [the whole] region and will actively continue its constructive role in the establishment of lasting peace and security,” Amir-Abdollahian added.

“Iran welcomes effective cooperation and consultation with regional countries” for establishing security in the region, he stressed.

He also referred to Iran’s nuclear program and the ongoing negotiations on the program, stating, “A peaceful nuclear program and the nuclear negotiations of our country are not against any side (country) in the region.”

Iran and the P5+1 group of countries -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany -- reached a mutual understanding on the parameters of a comprehensive agreement over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program in Lausanne, Switzerland, on April 2.

Iran and the six-party group have agreed to finalize a comprehensive deal on Tehran’s nuclear program by the end of June.
