A man was fatally shot at a college campus in the US state of North Carolina after a gunman opened fire at the Wayne Community College in the city Goldsboro.
The school was put on lockdown and evacuated on Monday after a print shop operator who had just arrived at work was shot on the third floor of a campus building, school officials and authorities said.
The suspected gunman, Kenneth Stancil, knew the victim, identified as Ron Lane, but it's not immediately clear what led to the shooting, according to authorities.
Police have searched the college campus for Stancil, who was previously a student at the college, and think he has fled. They are using helicopters and dogs to search for him nearby.
“This is indeed a sad day for Wayne Community College and this close family and community,” school President Kay Albertson said.
“Our hearts are heavy at the loss of an employee — a valued employee — and we will soon be reaching out to the family.”
Authorities have described Stancil as a white man, about 5'11" (180 cm), with a goatee and a tattoo over his eye.
Each year, more than 32,000 people die as a consequence of gun-related violence, suicides, and accidents in the United States, which is by far the highest among industrialized countries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The US averages 87 deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.
