Leader: Nick Clegg
The party was formed in 1988 by a merger of the erstwhile Liberal and Social Democratic Parties. Constitutionalism, electoral reforms, progressive taxation, environmentalism, human rights laws, and civil liberties are some of the mottos of the party. In 2010 elections, the Liberal Democrats emerged as the third largest party after Conservative and Labour. The party won 57 seats with 23% of the vote and helped Conservatives form a coalition government. Neck Clegg who was elected as the party's leader in 2007 became the deputy prime minister in the Conservative-led coalition.
Election promises:
• Guarantee qualified teachers, a core curriculum and sex education in all state schools
• Ring fence the education budget for 2-19 year olds
• A strategy to end child illiteracy by 2025
• 15hrs a week free childcare from the end of paid parental leave
