Press TV has conducted an interview with Michael Penn, a Tokyo-based journalist and political commentator, to discuss Japan’s local elections.

Penn says that people in Japan stick with Liberal Democrats because Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government is the only government somewhat capable of running the country at the moment. He adds that the voters’ turnout for the local elections have been rather weak, reaching only 30 to 40 percent of the eligible population.

The analyst says the recent victory for Liberal Democrats in Japan does not necessarily show Abe’s strength and is in fact due to the noticeable weakness in opposition. People stick to Liberal Democrats regardless of their policies because at the moment they are less embarrassing, he says.

Penn concludes by saying that the Japanese people remain strongly skeptical of nuclear energy and the election of two pro-nuclear governors is because they belong to states that economically rely on nuclear power plants.
