The victory of the Likud party led by Israekli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel’s parliamentary elections with at least 29 seats in the Knesset, was not surprising for the Palestinian Authority officials, who saw in the result a success of a campaign platform based on settlements, racism, apartheid and denying the Palestinian people their fundamental human rights.
It was a tight race between Netanyahu’s likud party and the opposition leader Isaaq Herzoq’s Zionist Union, which only won 24 seats. Palestinian Authority says that several issues spurred Netanyahu’s base into action following surveys that showed Netanyahu’s Likud party is several seats behind its rivals. Netanyahu had put what he called Israel’s security at the forefront of his campaign, and had promised not to offer concessions to the Palestinians.
The Palestinian Authority meanwhile, has promised to step up its diplomatic campaign for statehood, insisting that it will go to the International Criminal Court at The Hague. The Palestinian Authority has also called on the international community to support its efforts to internationalize the struggle for dignity and freedom.
The Palestinians made it clear before the Israeli elections, that there is little to choose between Likud Party led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Labor party led by Isaaq Herzog, when it comes to Palestinian issues, and now that Netanyahu’s party has won the elections, Palestinians expect even more aggressive policy from Tel Aviv.
