Discussing the situation on Afghanistan, various countries hailed Afghan leaders proclamation that they had begun a "Transformation Decade" on January 1st, and that the country would move toward stability and less violence.

Various countries took the floor before the 15 member body to comment on the situation in the country. Representing the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ambassador Khooshroo highlighted the dangers of drug trafficking, a problem that has rapidly expanded in Afghanistan since the US led invasion in 2002.

The Iranian envoy concluded his remarks to the Security Council by sending his best wishes for the traditional Nowruz holiday, which Afghanistan and Iran share together with several other countries in the Middle East and Central Asia.

Following the meeting, Nicholas Haysom, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, briefed the press on the situation in the country, and took questions.

When asked by PressTV about the problem of narcotics trafficking, Haysom chuckled awkwardly before giving a response.

Can you describe what’s being done to the combat the trafficking of Narcotics in Afghanistan?

Exactly why UN Special Representative Haysom found the serious problem of drug addiction to be humorous remains unclear. He did go on to describe that the United Nation's efforts reduce drug trafficking, what many say is already a continued source of instability in the region.
