Americans say US government No.1 problem: Poll

Americans continue to name the government as the most important US problem.

Americans continue to name the US government as the most important problem facing the United States, followed by the country’s economic and unemployment problems , according to a new poll.

The latest results from a March 5-8 Gallup poll found that 18 percent of Americans consider the federal government as the most important US problem, a distinction it has had for the past four months.

The survey, conducted with 1,025 American adults, also found that 11 percent of Americans mention the economy and 10 percent name jobs as the No. 1 problem.

Government, the economy and joblessness have been the most important problems listed by Americans for over a year, though issues such as terrorism, healthcare, racial tensions and immigration have been mentioned among the biggest problems in recent polls.

Americans' confidence in the economy has been dropping during late February and early March, a separate Gallup survey found.

The latest poll found that many Americans are still concerned about terrorism. A total of 14 percent of Americans cite terrorism, the ISIL terrorist group and national security among the most significant problems.

Satisfaction with direction of US at 31%

Meanwhile, two-thirds of Americans continue to be dissatisfied with the direction of the US, based on the latest Gallup poll results.

While the current satisfaction level with the nation's direction is relatively higher compared with recent years, still, only 31 percent of Americans remain satisfied.

Satisfaction with the US direction had declined in 2013 and 2014 after reaching 33 percent during the 2012 presidential campaign.

Satisfaction had reached an all-time low of 7 percent in late 2008 at the height of the financial crisis.
