Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi held talks with the IAEA’s Director General Yukio Amano just a day after the latest nuclear talks in Geneva.
Araqchi said the International Atomic Energy Agency would play a very important role in any possible agreement between Iran and the P5+1.
Iran’s IAEA envoy told us earlier claims that Tehran is not cooperating with the agency are baseless.
Iran and the the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany ended another round of talks in Geneva on Monday. The talks were led by Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his US counterpart John Kerry. Also attending were the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization and the US Energy Secretary.
Araqchi described the Geneva talks as intense but useful and constructive. He said sanctions was a key issue and that progress was made in some areas.
Negotiators are trying to narrow differences ahead of a July first deadline to reach a comprehensive deal.
Both sides have frequently said there won't be an agreement on anything unless there's agreement on everything. So nuclear talks will continue in Geneva next week. At the same time the IAEA Board of Governors will begin discussions, with Iran on the agenda.
