US, Europe ‘double standard on war on drugs' angers Iran

Outraged at the US and Europe for accusing Iran of being too harsh on drug traffickers; Iran's top crime fighter, Prosecutor General Ebrahim Raeesi, has accused western countries of hypocrisy.

"There’s absolutely no doubt that Iran is very serious when it comes to drug crimes. We are not looking for a pat on the back! Are we’re asking for is that international organizations let us do our job because it is quite obvious that western countries are not adamant in this fight. All this is happening in Afghanistan and under their noses! Now I have a question: Who is really undermining human rights? The country that is fighting drug trafficking or those who let it all happen?"

These were the opening comments of the annual meeting of drug control law enforcement officers where police chiefs and border guards were present to coordinate their efforts to combat the manufacture and distribution of illegal drugs, drug-related crimes, AND health consequences of drug abuse.

The immediate victim of drug smuggling from neighboring Afghanistan and Pakistan, Iran is on the frontline of the fight against drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, the ramifications of illegal drug trade go far beyond 1.5 million drug addicts in Iran according to official statistics.

Producing a national drug control strategy to direct anti-drug efforts involves more than just the police. It requires a program, budget, and guidelines for cooperation among several government organizations.
