The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe hosted MPs from around the world to discuss the crisis in Ukraine amid reports of frequent violations of the new ceasefire deal endorsed by leaders of Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine last week. The OSCE’s chief monitor in Ukraine raised concern over the human cost of the war, saying his team had been denied access to the war-stricken areas.
The OSCE has raised the idea of establishing an international peacekeeping force to complement the current monitoring mission.
What all OSCE representatives agree on is the need for the full implementation of the Minsk agreement but the level of divergence when it comes to facts on the ground has been described as quite unprecedented.
Ukrainian representatives accused Russia of attempting to subdue Ukraine through further bloodshed. Demonstrators gathered outside the OSCE building made similar claims.Amid the intensified debate inside, Britain’s envoy supported claims that heavy weaponry had been supplied by Russia.
Russian MP Alexey Pushkov said the majority of those killed in Donetsk and Luhansk were the victims of Ukrainian shelling, adding that Moscow should not be viewed as the sole political power responsible for helping implement the ceasefire.
What started as a political conflict and quickly turned into a military crisis has now evolved into a humanitarian catastrophe. Unless a ceasefire is put into actual affect and heavy weapons are withdrawn from conflict zones, things are set to get worse.
