According to a new study, air quality is worsening in the Indian capital New Delhi, the particulate matter in the air is 10 times higher than the standards set by the world health organization.

The study was conducted by Greenpeace; an environmental organization which focuses on the most critical environmental issues across the globe.

The survey was conducted between January 23 and February 12 at different places across the capital. The study showed the maximum level of Particulate matter of 2.5 microns was alarming which can become lethal by reducing lung functioning and various respiratory illness.

Reports suggest pollution is the biggest cause of early deaths in India; claiming around 1.6 million lives annually. Records say more than 7 million vehicles are plying on Delhi’s roads and everyday more than a thousand registrations of new vehicles are recorded. Experts say the new government must consider serious measures with main focus on the transport sector that will help reduce vehicular emissions.

Air pollution affects the most vulnerable groups especially the children and the elderly. Unlike developed countries India has neither precautionary measures nor any health advisories in place, and it has made environmental experts so worried. They have described it a health emergency and called for comprehensive efforts from the government to curb the levels.
