Gunman in Denmark attacks was ‘prone to radicalization’

Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein, the suspected gunman behind the recent shooting incidents in Denmark

The gunman believed to have been behind recent shooting incidents in Denmark had previously been flagged by prison officials as having the potential for ‘becoming radicalized,’ the Danish intelligence service says.

The 22-year-old, identified by local media as Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein, had been reported by Denmark’s Prison and Probation Service as being at “risk of radicalization” in September last year, when he was in prison after being convicted of stabbing, the Danish Security and Intelligence Service said in a statement released on Tuesday.

Danish police claimed that El-Hussein had been released from prison two weeks before the raids - which occurred on Saturday - and that he had a background in criminal activities.

The gunman was born in Denmark and was known to police because of a criminal record that includes violence and possession of weapons, Copenhagen police said in a statement issued on Sunday.

On Saturday, one person was killed and three police officers were wounded when El-Hussein reportedly attacked a café hosting a debate attended by controversial Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks in the Danish capital, Copenhagen.

Hours later, he allegedly attacked the main synagogue of Copenhagen, killing one person and leaving two policemen injured.

El-Hussein was killed during a shootout with police following the second incident.
