Spaniards have taken to the streets of the capital Madrid to protest against a controversial public security law.
The law approved by lawmakers back in December introduces hefty fines for unauthorized protests, burning the national flag and demonstrating outside the parliament building or strategic installations. It also allows for the summary expulsion of migrants that try to illegally enter the country. The law has sparked fierce opposition from critics and human rights activists who have dubbed it the Gag Law. They say the new law is meant to silence protests against the government’s handling of the country’s financial crisis.
